MUMBAI: Renowned Indian commentator Harsha Bhogle, who has been associated with Indian cricket for the last 30 years and was also part of IPl commentary team since 2008, will not be featured in the ongoing ninth editon of the Indian Premier League (IPL), as his contract has been terminated by BCCI just a week back.
Reacting to this surprise move by the Board, the veteran commentator said,” No one told me anything. I have not been formally told of the reason even now. All I have been told is 'it is a BCCI management decision.”
Bhogle on Saturday tweeted:
Many believes that one reason of being his ouster could be Amitabh bachan’s Tweet during the WT20 where the Bollywood star had criticized Indian commentators for discussing foreign players more than the home players. The actor had tweeted,” “With all due respect, it would be really worthy of an Indian commentator to speak more about our players than others all the time.”
Taken aback by Bachahan’s Tweet, Bhogle later posted on his facebook page,” I must confess to being a bit taken aback by the intensity of the criticism yesterday over the question of focussing more on Indian players during the telecast. It emerged after a tweet from Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, someone I admire enormously for the dignified way in which he has always conducted himself.”
On condition of anonymity a BCCI officer told The Indian Express , “When deciding the commentators, we take feedback from everyone. We monitor social media reactions on commentators, and also take inputs from players.”
